Rediscovering the Familiar: Finding Inspiration in Everyday Spaces

We walk through the same places every day — but how often do we really see them?

That simple question sparked my latest short film, “Rediscovering the Familiar,” filmed at Bailey Park in the heart of Winston-Salem, the City of Arts & Innovation.

The Idea Behind the Film

As a filmmaker, I spend a lot of time chasing new locations, fresh ideas, and different perspectives. But this time, I wanted to look closer — to capture how creativity often lives right where we are.

Bailey Park, with its mix of nature, architecture, and community, became the perfect setting. It’s a place I’ve walked through countless times, but never quite noticed in this way.

At Lenny J Media, I believe storytelling starts with seeing — not just producing. This project reminded me that perspective is often our most powerful creative tool.

Creating “Rediscovering the Familiar”

This project was a solo shoot — one camera, one tripod, and a simple concept: slow down and see.

I focused on light, movement, and the small details that give Winston-Salem its pulse. The sounds of the park — wind, footsteps, laughter — became part of the rhythm.

The goal wasn’t to make a commercial piece, but to let the visuals breathe and remind viewers that inspiration doesn’t always mean going somewhere new.

The Message

The film’s voiceover says it best:

“It’s amazing what we discover when we just slow down and really look at the world around us. Sometimes inspiration is just about noticing what’s been there all along.”

For me, that line captures what filmmaking is about — perspective.

Whether it’s telling a client’s brand story or creating something personal, it starts with learning to see again.

Closing Thoughts

“Rediscovering the Familiar” reminded me that creativity doesn’t require grand budgets or exotic places — it just asks for presence.

If it encourages even one person to pause, notice, and create, then it’s done its job.

And if you’re a business owner or creative professional, maybe this serves as a reminder too: Sometimes, the story worth telling is already right in front of you.
